1 PhD Student Position (65%, E13 TV-L, 3 years) Mathematics / Statistics in China (19th–21st century)

 

The Chair for Sinology with a focus on the Intellectual and Cultural History of China — Institute for Near Eastern and East Asian Languages and Civilizations — at FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg (Germany) invites applications for the position of a PhD student (f/m/d) related to mathematics or statistics in China (19th21st century).

The position is part of the interdisciplinary project sin-aps funded generously by the Alexander-von-Humboldt-Foundation and free of teaching obligations. The topic of the PhD proposal must fit within the framework of the research conducted in this project, either in the history of mathematics or the politics of quantification in modern or contemporary China.

The successful candidate is expected to have

  • a Master degree in Chinese studies,
  • or, in the case of native speakers, a Master degree in a discipline related to mathematics, statistics, or the history of science
  • a strong interest either in the historical epistemology of mathematics or the political epistemology of statistics,
  • excellent knowledge of working languages English and Chinese, incl. Classical Chinese if relevant to the project.
