The interdisciplinary workshop at the ICSCC Fudan University took place
from 23-24 September 2019. Organized by Henrike Rudolph it addressed the
growing number of research projects adopting tools and methods from
sociological network analysis to study the past. In Chinese studies,
however, historical and archeological network research (HNR) is still a
marginal phenomenon despite all efforts to digitalize sources and to
increase the accessibility of data. Especially in comparison to advances
made, for example, in the study of intellectual networks of the European
Enlightenment or the trade networks of Ancient Greece, research on
Chinese historical networks offers considerable as yet unexploited
potential to reexamine our assumptions about the past and to explore new
avenues of inquiry.
