By examining how Wang Fuzhi 王夫之 (1619–1692) treats the concept of ji 己 in his Zhuangzi commentary Zhuangzi Tong 《莊子通》 (Comprehensive Explanation of the Zhuangzi), this lecture asks a simple but far-reaching question: How does a self-centred picture of the world form, and how, from Wang’s perspective, might we think beyond it?
