The last three decades have witnessed a dramatic resurgence in writing on Qing history, which became not only the subject of interest concerning questions of ethnicity and colonialism, but also a battle ground for taking control of the narrative on China’s (multi)national past. Despite this increasing interest in China’s imperial past, the Qing Empire remains at the peripheries of conventional Global History studies. How to integrate the Qing into the fabrics of Global History and Empires Studies is therefore an ongoing issue and necessitates further discussion. Several approaches that attempt to integrate the Qing into the fabric of Global History and Empire Studies shall be discussed, such as the concept of “Eurasian” multiethnic empires and the “New Imperial History” paradigm shifts. Other concepts, such as cultural entanglement and borderland studies of ebb and flow, seek to place the Sinorussian borderland and the contact zone of Inner Asia with both the Russian and Qing empire at the heart of global discourses.
