“Where Research Begins: Research Workshop with Tom Mullaney and Chris Rea”

Join Stanford and UBC professors Tom Mullaney and Chris Rea for a hands-on workshop where you’ll learn how to identify and develop a research topic that genuinely matters to you, and holds significance for others. The hardest part of research, this workshop will show, isn’t answering a question, but knowing what to do before you have a clear question in mind. The „Where Research Begins“ workshop tackles the two main challenges every researcher faces when starting a new project:

How to find a compelling problem to investigate—one that truly matters to you, deeply and personally.

How to design your research project so that the results will matter to anyone else.

Rea and Mullaney will guide participants through a series of simple yet ingenious exercises to help you start your research project on the right foot.

This hands-on workshop is perfect for you if you (or your students):

  • have difficulty choosing a research topic
  • know your topic, but are unsure how to turn it into a research project
  • feel intimidated by or unqualified to do research
  • worry that you’re asking the wrong questions about your research topic
  • have plenty of good ideas, but aren’t sure which one to commit to
  • feel like your research topic was imposed by someone else
  • want to learn new ways to think about how to do research
